Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio-The Lake Erie Crushers fall to the Washington Wild Things, 3-1 on Saturday Evening as the Crushers struggled to score on the Wild Things pitching staff for the second consecutive night at All Pro Freight Stadium.

The loss for the Crushers (8-15) marks their third loss in a row and seventh straight loss at home. The Wild Things (11-15) improve to 8-6 on the road and go for the sweep tomorrow.

In the second inning, the Wild Things put a two spot on the board. CJ Beatty led off the inning with a double to right. Sam Mende followed it up with another double to right that scored Beatty. Lee Orr hit the third consecutive double of the inning, a ground rule to left center that scored Mende. Crushers starter Hunter Adkins (0-2) was able to settle down and retire the next three Wild Things hitters.

The Wild Things would score again in the fourth inning. Sam Mende led off the inning with a double to left. He moved to third on a fly out to center field off the bat of Orr. Then with Jeudy Valdez at the plate, Mende came home to score on a wild pitch from Adkins.

Washington was held hitless from the fifth inning on as Adkins went seven innings, giving up four hits, three earned runs and striking out six. Brad Duffy and Mike Devine each pitched an inning of scoreless relief.

The Crushers only run of the game came in the fifth inning. The run snapped a streak of 24 straight innings without a Crushers run. With two outs, Wild Things starter Matt Sergey (2-3) walked Cody Stevens and Frank Desico. Juan Sanchez followed by hitting a single to left that plated Stevens from second. Sanchez is now on a seven game hitting streak.

The Crushers began the bottom of the ninth inning with Joey Burney leading off. Burney hit a soft grounder on the first base line to the pitcher who picked the ball up and threw to first. The ball hit Burney in the back but he was ruled out for runner's interference on the base line. The Crushers Designated Hitter was ejected by home plate umpire Andy Dudones after arguing.

Sergey went six innings for the Wild Things, giving up four hits, one earned run, walking three and striking out six batters. Tim Giel came on for 1.1 innings, giving up a hit and striking out one. Steve Messner then pitched a scoreless inning and Matt Purnell (2) then came on for the save.
