Grizzlies Drop Tight Finale to Otters
August 29, 2019 - Frontier League (FL)
Gateway Grizzlies News Release
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Gateway Grizzlies threatened with three runs in the ninth inning Thursday but ultimately stranded the potential tying run at second base in a 6-5 loss to the Evansville Otters at Bosse Field.
Gateway (37-56) was swept in its final road series of 2019, while the Otters (56-37) clinched a playoff spot with their victory and remained a half-game ahead of Florence for the West Division lead.
Ian Kahaloa (3-7) took the loss for the Grizzlies. He allowed five Otters runs, all of which scored in the first inning, and eight hits while striking out five and walking five across five innings of work. Jason Seever and Grant Black both threw scoreless innings out of the Grizzlies' bullpen.
Gateway battled back with a two-run Wesley Jones single in the fourth inning that scored Andrew Daniel and Shawon Dunston Jr., but the Otters added an insurance run - that proved to be the game winner - with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Daniel and Dunston Jr. walked to open the Grizzlies' ninth inning and, after a pair of quick outs, Greg White knocked Daniel in with a single. White and Dunston Jr. scored on a two-run Zak Taylor double, but Connor Owings grounded out to second base and left Zak Taylor in scoring position to end the game.
White was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. His was the only multi-hit game for the Grizzlies.
Gateway will finish its season at home with a three-game series starting at 7:05 p.m. CDT Friday night against the Washington Wild Things. Reign Letkeman (4-4, 3.42) is scheduled to start the opener for the Grizzlies.
