AVON, OH-The Gateway Grizzlies managed just a single run on three hits Wednesday night, falling to the Lake Erie Crushers 2-1 in game two of a three-game series.
Nate Melek (3-4) tossed the second consecutive complete game for the Grizzlies but suffered the loss. Melek allowed the two runs on nine hits. He struck out seven.
Lake Erie (25-18) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an infield hit by Gordon Gronkowski. Jodem Rivera scored the run after starting the inning with a walk.
The Grizzlies (16-27) got their only run in the sixth inning on a two-out home run by Brandon Johnson. Johnson's homer, his fourth of the season, was his second in as many nights. The long ball tied the score 1-1.
The Crushers got a leadoff homer from Arden McWilliams in the bottom of the inning for the 2-1 final.
Chad Rothford and Stephen Holdren had the only other two hits for the Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies and Crushers will play the rubber game of the three-game series Thursday night in Avon. First pitch is set for 6:05 pm, central time.
