Utah Grizzlies News Release
West Valley City, Utah - The Utah Grizzlies battled back from a 1-0 third period deficit to defeat the San Francisco Bulls 2-1 Tuesday night at Maverik Center.
Entering the game, Utah and San Francisco were separated by just two points in the Western Conference standings. With the win, Utah now leads the Bulls by four points for the sixth spot in the playoff race with 16 games remaining. Utah skated three skaters short with nine forwards and four defensemen as Jimmy Martin moved up front.
"I thought we did some pretty good things tonight," said Grizzlies Head Coach Kevin Colley. "It was a good team effort with four defensemen, we stuck with it, and then Gaelan Patterson drives the net and gets a stick on a shot. There's a lot of things to build on now."
The only goal in the first 43:27 of the game came from San Francisco 1:57 into the second period. It was the only shot out of 25 faced by Utah goaltender Adam Morrison that ended up in the Utah net.
Utah drew a delayed penalty early in the third period and went to work six-on-five; but a pass split the middle and rolled 200 feet down ice rolling off of the post of an empty-net as Utah averted disaster and a 2-0 deficit.
As the power-play started, Utah drew another minor and started a five-on-three situation. They scored 22 seconds into that situation as Nick Tuzzolino blasted a shot that after several efforts in front was knocked in by Gaelan Patterson.
Patterson struck again with 2:01 left in regulation as he tipped in an Adam Estoclet shot, just moments after winning a draw in the Utah end. Marty Lee also picked up an assist seven days after being traded from San Francisco to Utah.
"He's got that maturity about himself both on and off the ice; the way he carries himself," said Colley on the 22-year-old assistant captain Patterson. "He sacrificed and dropped back to play defense for a month, he earned the "A" on his sweater and he's getting rewarded for having a team first attitude."
The Grizzlies outshot San Francisco 42-25 and 39-18 over the final 50 minutes of the game.
Utah now heads to Boise for games Wednesday, Friday and Saturday with the Steelheads. Face-off all three nights is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
Utah returns home for a Wild $2 Wednesday on March 6 when they will host Gwinnett. There will be $2 Hot Dogs, $2 Fries, $2 Soft Drinks, $2 Draft Beers and $5 Student Tickets available to students with ID at the arena box office.
The Grizzlies host Colorado Friday, March 8; Saturday, March 9 and Sunday, March 10.
