Elmira Jackals News Release

ELMIRA, N.Y. - February 27, 2013 - The Elmira Jackals hosted the Wheeling Nailers for the final time this season on Wednesday night at First Arena. The Jackals collected a 5-1 win to improve their record to 30-20-6 on the season.

The first period painted an ominous picture for how the game might turn out as Wheeling outshot Elmira 19-8, including a penalty shot, and scored the lone goal to take a 1-0 lead into the dressing room. Working a 3-on-2 rush from the neutral zone, the Nailers worked the puck to Zach Torquato on the left wing for a one-timer that beat Maxime Clermont between the pads. Clermont slammed the door on the other 18 shots, though, to insure the Jackals stayed within striking distance. His biggest test was when Torquato received a penalty shot with 18 seconds left in the frame, but the Jackals' netminder denied that bid.

The Jackals wasted no time turning the tide in the second period by scoring a goal within the first minute. Matt Carter hit Brandon Blandina with a pass low in the right wing and the Jackals rookie lifted a shot over Peter Delmas' glove for his sixth goal of the season. Four minutes and seven seconds later Jordon Southorn sprung Chaz Johnson on a breakaway and he beat Delmas five hole for the go-ahead goal, and eventual game winner. The Jackals took the play to the Nailers in the second and outshot them 15-10.

The third period was a mix of more offense for the Jackals and plenty of fisticuffs. Andrew Rowe scored a breakaway goal of his own at 1:49 for his team-leading 20th goal. Carter followed up with a wraparound score for his fourth of the season, second as a Jackal, to build the lead up to three at 4-1. Then, before the period was even halfway over, Southorn collected the rebound of a Johnson one-timer and wristed it past Delmas for his ninth goal. That tally sparked the Nailers' collective temper and a brawl broke out at the 9:04 mark that led to a combined 70 penalty minutes and two game misconducts. The rest of the game was fairly tame as the Jackals cruised to their fifth win of the season over Wheeling.

Clermont netted his 15th win of the season by stopping 41 of 42 shots. The Jackals ended the night 0-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
