West Valley City, Utah - The Utah Grizzlies (29-22-5-3) defeated the Ontario Reign (31-17-4-5) 4-3 Monday night at Maverik Center.
Utah took two of three from Ontario on the weekend series and goes 4-2 on the home stand; building a six-point lead on Alaska for fourth place in the Pacific Division.
"I thought a lot of guys did good things," said Head Coach/General Manager Tim Branham. "I thought we did a lot of good things. It was a good response from last game."
11 Grizzlies tallied a single goal or an assist in the game with Barry Almeida being the only player with multiple-points on one goal and one assist.
Igor Bobkov stopped 29 of 32; improving to 14-8-2-0 allowing only three power-play goals.
Utah led 1-0 after 2 periods outshooting Ontario 11-5. Almeida (12) made it 1-0 12:40 into the first period as he went hard to the net on a pass from T.J. Syner. Connor Hardowa also picked up an assist. 2:01 later, the Grizzlies made it 2-0 as H.T. Lenz worked in for his 8th goal of the year with assists going to Steve MacIntyre and Johnnie Searfoss.
"Coach has been drilling us with going to the net hard and getting second chance opportunities," said Almeida. "In playoff hockey that's how you're going to score. It was a must win for us. I'm proud of the guys. They worked hard."
The Grizzlies built a 4-0 lead in the second period on goals from Ryan Hayes (23) and Cam Wojtala (4). Hayes scored on a major power-play situation from Almeida and Johnston as he knocked home a puck in the crease. Wojtala scored going hard to the net from Mathieu Aubin and Alex Krushelnyski.
Ontario made it 4-2 with two power-play goals 57 seconds apart at 13:25 and 14:22 of the second period.
The Reign made it 4-3 with 4:25 left in the game on another power-play score, but the Grizzlies held on.
"This team is resilient," said Branham. "We hate to lose, that's the thing. When we lose a game everyone is in a bad mood and everyone is focusing on what we need to do to get a win. That's what you need."
