Second Period Surge Sends Nailers Past IceMen

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- The Evansville IceMen, presented by Coors Light, rode a one-goal lead into the first intermission. However a four-goal second period helped the Wheeling Nailers glide to a 5-2 win. The loss snaps the IceMen's three-game point streak and marks the first regulation setback of March for Evansville. Jarret Lukin and Braden Pimm both had multiple points for the IceMen.

On the game's first power play, the IceMen jumped in front. Lukin fired a shot that bounced past Eric Hartzell and in. Lukin's 11th of the season gave the IceMen a 1-0 lead. Robin Soudek and Pimm picked up the assists on the play that put the IceMen up one after the first period.

Wheeling controlled the second period. The Nailers got four goals in the middle frame including two from David Gilbert and tallies from Zack Torquato and Derek Army. This second stanza surge gave Wheeling a 4-1 lead going into the final frame.

Evansville fought back in the third period. Pimm zipped a pass to Daniel Johnston who hammed a hard shot into the back of the net. Johnston's third of the year brought the IceMen within two. Lukin grabbed his second point of the night with an assist that would earn him third star honors.

The IceMen threw 14 shots at the net in the third period alone and fired 40 shots overall. Hartzell stopped 38 of them to earn the win for the Nailers.

On Friday the IceMen will travel to the state capital for a clash with the Indy Fuel. That game begins at 6:35 p.m. and can be seen at Bar Louie, the Official Watch Party Destination of your Evansville IceMen. Friday's game will also be available on ESPN Evansville 105.3, ESPN Evansville.com, and ECHL TV.

The IceMen return home on Saturday to begin a two-game series with the Orlando Solar Bears. Saturday's game will be Pi Day, with the date matching up with the first five digits of the number pi. The IceMen will wear special Pi Day jerseys that will be available for purchase at a post-game jersey auction. Plus there will be a pie-eating contest during intermission.
