Grand Rapids Griffins News Release

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League on Friday signed goaltender Michal Lanicek (LAN-ih-chehk) to a professional tryout. Lanicek replaces Joey MacDonald, who suffered a groin injury in Wednesday's 2-1 loss to San Antonio. He'll serve as the backup to AHL All-Star Marc Lamothe tonight when the Griffins visit the Milwaukee Admirals at 8:12 p.m.

A 1999 draft pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Lanicek began the season with Winston-Salem of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League, before joining Muskegon of the United Hockey League. In five games with the Fury, the 21-year-old has posted a 2-1 record with a 3.37 goals against average and a 0.903 save percentage.

Lanicek played the majority of his 2001-02 rookie season for current Griffins head coach Danton Cole in Muskegon, earning a 10-4-1 record with two shutouts, a 1.98 GAA and a 0.924 save percentage.

The native of the Czech Republic has won 18 of his 31 decisions and shows a 2.76 GAA in 39 professional outings.
