Cedar Park, TX - The Texas Stars (27-30-2-2, 58 points) were defeated by the Grand Rapids Griffins (27-23-6-4, 64 points) 5-2 in front of 5,361 fans at the Cedar Park Center on Tuesday. Left wing Fabian Brunnstrom and center Chris Conner each registered two goals, as the Griffins took their first victory over the Stars this season. Goalie Ty Conklin (7-3-0) took care of the rest, finishing with 38 saves. Defenseman Brenden Dillon and left wing Matt Fraser each scored for the Stars. Texas goalie Tyler Beskorowany (10-16-0) stopped 22 of 27 shots as the Stars fell to 16-11-2-1 at home. Texas takes on the Oklahoma City Barons on Friday, March 16th at 7:30 p.m. at Cedar Park Center.
Grand Rapids scored early in the first period with a goal from left wing Fabian Brunnstrom at 3:43. Center Joakim Andersson and right wing Francis Pare helped on the play, giving Grand Rapids a 1-0 lead. The Griffins struck again 28 seconds later as center Chris Conner found the back of the net at 4:11. Center Jamie Johnson added an assist, strengthening Grand Rapids' lead to 2-0. Texas got on the board 33 seconds later with a slapshot from defenseman Brenden Dillon at 4:44. Dillon's fourth goal of the season was set up by center Scott Glennie and left wing Luke Gazdic, cutting the Griffins' lead to 2-1. Grand Rapids pushed its lead to 3-1 as left wing Tomas Tatar fired a shot past Beskorowany at 12:51 of the period. Defenseman Garnet Exelby and center Landon Ferraro each provided an assist.
Texas cut into Grand Rapids' lead again midway through the second period. Left wing Matt Fraser slipped the puck past Conklin at 10:12. Defenseman Jace Coyle assisted on Fraser's 29th goal of the year and the 3-2 tally. The Griffins broke out to a 4-2 lead with 3:47 remaining in the frame. Left wing Fabian Brunnstrom notched his second goal of the night on the power play. Right wing Francis Pare and left wing Tomas Tatar each added an assist.
Grand Rapids scored late in the third period, strengthening its lead to 5-2. Center Chris Conner scored on the power play with 3:45 remaining in the final frame. Left wing Chris Minard and defenseman Bryan Rufenach set up Conner's second goal of the night.
The Stars take on the Oklahoma City Barons on Friday, March 16th at 7:30 p.m. Friday's game, presented by Best Buy, is a 3-2-1 night featuring $3 domestic drafts, $2 sodas and $1 hot dogs. The first 2,500 fans to Friday's game will receive a player magnet courtesy of Time Warner Cable. The Stars remain home for a 7:00 p.m. faceoff against the Barons on Saturday, March 17th. Saturday features the State Farm Family Four Pack, consisting of four tickets, four sodas, and four hot dogs starting at $48. The first 2,500 fans at Saturday's game will also receive a Texas Stars t-shirt, presented by CTRMA.
