Oklahoma City Comets News Release

Ben Grieve's pinch-hit, two-run homer in the Tuesday's ninth inning erased a one-run Oklahoma lead and propelled the Iowa Cubs to a 5-4 win in the series opener at Principal Park. The RedHawks have lost seven straight and allowed the eventual winning run in the ninth inning in each of the last three games.

Two-run homers by Rashad Eldridge (in the second inning) and Gerald Laird (in the seventh) allowed Oklahoma to take a 4-3 lead into the ninth. Closer Jose Veras allowed a leadoff walk to Micah Hoffpauir. Grieve pinch hit for former RedHawk Cody Ransom and drove a 3-2 pitch over the right field scoreboard for the game-winning homer.

Veras took Oklahoma's third blown save in the last five games and fell to 1-5 on the season. Iowa reliever Roberto Novoa got the win to improve to 2-2 by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

With first-place Albuquerque losing on Tuesday, the RedHawks remain one game back in the American South race.

Game two of the series is Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. CDT at Principal Park. Right-hander Josh Rupe is slated to pitch for Oklahoma against Jon Leicester.
