Greensboro's Esch One-Hits Legends in 5-1 Victory

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Jake Esch struck out eight batters and only allowed one hit over seven innings to lead the Greensboro Grasshoppers to a 5-1 victory over the Lexington Legends on Monday night.

Esch (1-1) picked up the win in his second start with Greensboro. At one point, Esch retired 11 batters in a row. James Nygren pitched the last two innings.

Greensboro went in front in the third inning on a solo homer by James Wooster.

The Grasshoppers added another run in the sixth. With one out, Josh Adams doubled to right field, John Schultz walked and Matt Smith singled to load the bases. Ryan Rieger doubled to center field, scoring Adams. Schultz was thrown out at home on the play, leaving Greensboro with a 2-0 lead.

Greensboro scored another run in the seventh on a one-out triple by Ryan Goetz and a sacrifice fly by Austin Barnes.

The Grasshoppers extended their lead to 5-0 in the eighth. Adams reached on a throwing error by Lexington reliever Evan Grills, and Smith followed with a home run to right field.

Lexington scored its only run in the ninth without a hit. Zach Johnson was hit by a pitch to begin the inning. Matt Duffy followed with a walk, and Brandon Meredith reached on a fielding error by Goetz at shortstop to load the bases. Johnson scored as Chris Epps grounded into a double play.

The lone Lexington hit came in the second inning when Meredith doubled to right-center field.

Legends starter Chris Devenski (7-7) was handed the loss after allowing two runs over five and two-thirds innings. He struck out seven batters and walked two.

Lexington and Greensboro will play game two of their three-game series Tuesday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
