Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads won their fourth straight game with a 5-1 victory against the Rome Braves, before 991 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Monday night. With the win, the 'Dads move within just a half game of tying the Hagerstown Suns for 1st place in the Northern Division Second Half Standings.
The Braves (35-20, 53-72) jumped in front with an unearned run in the top of the first against LHP Andrew Faulkner (W, 5-4). CF Tony Mueller led off the game with a bunt single and reached second base on a throwing error by C Kellin Deglan. 2B Ross Heffley then grounded an RBI single to center field, scoring Mueller and giving Rome the early 1-0 lead.
The Crawdads (32-25, 68-58) matched Rome with a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning against LHP Alex Wood (L, 3-3). SS Luis Sardinas led off with a line drive single to left field and advanced to second base on a groundout from 2B Rougned Odor. RF Trever Adams then pulled an RBI single to left, plating Sardinas and tying the score, 1-1.
The 'Dads moved in front with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. LF Alejandro Selen and Deglan started the stanza with consecutive singles, before both moving up ninety feet on a groundout. After a walk and a strikeout to load the bases with two down, Odor chopped a two-run single up the middle to lift the 'Dads into the 3-1 lead.
While Faulkner kept the Braves bats at bay, the Crawdads stretched their lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth. With two down, Urbanus reached base with his second walk of the game to extend the inning. Sardinas followed with an RBI double down the left-field line to plate Urbanus and put Hickory up, 4-1.
The Crawdads struck again in the bottom of the fifth. Cone doubled down the left-field line with one out in the inning. 3B Drew Robinson then ripped an RBI single the opposite way to left field, scoring Cone and stretching the Crawdads lead to 5-1.
Faulkner tossed one more scoreless frame, keeping the Braves at just the one run through his six-inning start. He retired 13 of 14 batters that he faced from midway through the first through the first two outs in the fifth, and finished with only four hits allowed while logging two strikeouts.
Hickory LHP Victor Payano (S, 1) picked up in the top of the seventh right where Faulkner left off. After allowing a double to the first batter in the seventh, Payano then rattled off nine consecutive outs through the final three frames to close the 5-1 victory for the Crawdads.
