Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (Aug. 20, 2012) -- The Kannapolis Intimidators pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of five Hagerstown errors en route to a 11-4 win over the Suns in the first game of a three-game series at Municipal Stadium. Courtney Hawkins, the White Sox first round pick this June, paced the Intimidators at the plate, going 4-for-6 with three doubles, two runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base.
Suns starter Dixon Anderson made his South Atlantic League debut, and the Intimidators initiated him with a five-run first inning aided by two walks and three Hagerstown errors. Hawkins put the Intimidators on the board with an RBI-double in the first inning and scored on an Anderson error. Chris Curley added an RBI-single for a 3-0 lead, and two more runs came home when Suns 3B Justin Miller let a ball get under his glove with two outs in the frame.
Anderson (0-1) gave up five runs (two earned) on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts in a losing effort.
Max Peterson (1-1) worked four scoreless relief innings for the Intimidators to earn the win, retiring 12 of 13 batters faced, giving up one hit while striking out three in relief of starter Jarrett Casey.
The Suns pulled within a run, 5-4, by scoring three in the fourth. Caleb Ramsey drove in a pair with a double, and Billy Burns punished the Intimidators for a Chris Curley two-out error by following with an RBI-single.
Curley redeemed himself in the following inning by blasting the first pitch he saw from reliever Ben Hawkins over the right-center field wall for his team-leading ninth home run. Two batter later, Michael Marjama followed suit with a solo home run (1). Joe De Pinto later added an RBI-double to put the Intimidators ahead, 8-4, through five innings.
Justin Miller's second error of the game, a two-out throwing error in the eighth inning, brought in two more Kannapolis runs, and Leighton Pangilinan added an RBI-double, his third hit of the game.
The Intimidators continue their three-game series with the Suns on Tuesday at Municipal Stadium. The Intimidators return to CMC- NorthEast Stadium on Tuesday, Aug. 28, to face the Greenville Drive. For ticket information, call the box office at (704) 932-3267 or visit www.IntimidatorsBaseball.com .
