Garcia Supplies Power as RiverDogs Fall 9-2

CHARLESTON, WV - Willy Garcia belted two homers and drove in four runs for the West Virginia Power as they knocked off the Charleston RiverDogs 9-2 in South Atlantic League action on Monday night at Appalachian Power Park.

The loss was the fourth in a row for the RiverDogs as they fell to 62-61 (23-33 in the second half). The Power picked up their third straight win and they are now 55-72 (32-25 in the second half).

West Virginia immediately got their offense going against starting pitcher Corey Black (1-2). In the first inning, Dan Gamache ripped a ground-rule double into left-center to score one run. Eric Avila (2-4, 2 RBI, run) tacked on two more in the inning with a double of his own to knock in a pair. Alen Hanson added to the lead in the next inning when he lined a two-run single into left and the Power found themselves ahead 5-0 after only two innings.

Charleston got on the board in the fourth when Ben Gamel (2-4, run) tripled and scored on a groundout by Ali Castillo, but starter Mike Jefferson (5-7) wouldn't allow anything else. In six innings, he gave up only three hits along with that one run to earn his fifth win. The lefty didn't issue a walk and struck out four on the night.

In the sixth, the run the RiverDogs got in the fourth was matched by the first of Garcia's (3-4, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 runs) round-trippers, a solo homer which cleared the left field wall for his 17th of the season.

The 6-1 score stood until the eighth, when Nick McCoy singled and scored on an error for Charleston's second run. In the bottom half, Garcia responded again with another long ball, his 18th on the year. This time, it was a three-run shot that he lifted over the wall in center to stake the Power to a 9-2 lead. Robert Kilcrease then finished off the game with a perfect ninth for West Virginia's 55th win of the year.

The second game of this three-game series will be Tuesday at 7:05 pm and the RiverDogs will send RHP Scottie Allen (4-7, 4.50 ERA) to the mound against RHP Robby Rowland (8-3, 3.31 ERA).
