Lexington Legends News Release
(AUGUSTA, Ga.) The Augusta GreenJackets overcame a five-run deficit late in the game and went on to a 6-5 victory over the Lexington Legends in 12 innings Sunday night. The win gave the GreenJackets a split of the four-game series.
The Legends built a 5-0 lead with a run in the third, two in the fourth and two in the fifth. Alfredo Escalera, who had 10 hits in 21 at bats in the series, drove in the third-inning run with a two-out double. In the fourth, Elier Hernandez, who was four-for-six in the game, led off with a single. He moved to second on a wild pitch and scored when Wander Franco's ground ball got past third baseman Jonah Arenado for an error. Franco, who reached second on the error, later scored on Corey Toups' sacrifice fly to give the Legends a 3-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, Escalera singled with one out, took second on a wild pitch, and came home on a single by Hernandez. Franco's double scored Hernandez, and the Legends led 5-0.
Augusta began its comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Arenado led off with a single and moved to second when Matt Pare grounded out. A wild pitch allowed Arenado to go to third, from where he scored on a single by Jeremy Sy. After a force play at second, Will Callaway singled, leaving runners at first and third. A double by Johneshwy Fargas scored a run, cutting the Legends' lead to 5-2.
The GreenJackets tied the score with three runs in the eighth. With one out, Ewing's ground ball to second base took a bad bounce for a base hit. Ewing stole second and went to third on Arenado's single. Pare's infield hit scored a run, and Sy's single brought Arenado home, making the score 5-4. After Cain walked to load the bases, Callaway delivered a sacrifice fly to left field to tie the game.
In the bottom of the 12th, Ewing drew a leadoff walk, and was sacrificed to second by Arenado. Deacon walked, and Sy followed with a line drive hit to right center field, scoring Ewing with the winning run.
Sy was nine-for-19 in the series and drove in six runs.
Raymundo Montero (3-2) got the win in relief. Evan Beal (1-1), who entered the game in the 12th, took the loss. Legends starter Scott Blewett pitched six shutout innings. He allowed four hits, struck out four batters and walked none.
The Legends return home for their next seven games. They'll open a three-game series against Lakewood Tuesday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
