Greenville Drive News Release
Savannah, GA - Needing a victory to avoid being swept in this weekend's four-game series, the Greenville Drive continued their season-long struggles against the Savannah Sand Gnats on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 3-1 contest to see their Southern Division lead drop to just one game. Savannah has now won all seven games between the two teams in 2015.
The story for Savannah was starting pitcher Brad Wieck (3-5), who punched out 10 Drive (31-26) hitters over seven innings of work to pick up the victory. David Roseboom and Jimmy Duff each hurled a scoreless inning of relief, with Duff closing things out and earning his fourth save.
The Sand Gnats (30-27) scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings against Drive starter Michael Kopech (2-4). Following a Jon Leroux leadoff single in the second, Tomas Nido tripled to left field to plate the first run.
A Luis Guillorme RBI groundout in the third gave the Sand Gnats their second run of the day, and Nido struck again in the fourth for an RBI single that scored Eudor Garcia, who began the inning with a single of his own.
Derek Miller led the Drive offensively by going 3-5 at the plate, and his seventh inning single plated Yoan Moncada for their only run of the afternoon. Moncada chipped in offensively with a 2-4 game.
Nido and Jonathan Johnson each collected two hits for the Sand Gnats.
Following an off day on Monday, Greenville returns home to Fluor Field on Tuesday night against the Augusta GreenJackets, affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM. RH Reed Reilly (3-2, 4.03) is scheduled to start the opener for the Drive, and the GreenJackets will send RH Sam Coonrod (2-1, 2.83) to the mound.
