Trenton Thunder News Release
(Akron OH) - For the second straight night Trenton earned a win from a first-time hurler as Shane Greene tossed five solid inning in his Double-A debut and the Thunder topped the Akron Aeros, 5-3, Wednesday night at Canal Park.
Jose Pirela's three-run home run capped a four-run, two-out rally in the fourth inning for the Thunder (35-35), who overcame an early 3-0 deficit to clinch the squad's first series win in the month of June.
Greene (1-0) allowed three runs on seven hits over the first three innings, but then settled in and held the Aeros scoreless in the fourth and fifth. Just promoted from Tampa before the start of the series, Greene followed righty Sean Black who won Tuesday night's game in his first appearance with Trenton.
Reegie Corona lined a two-out RBI double in the fourth against Akron starter Brett Brach (4-3) to bring the Thunder within 3-1 and leave runners on second and third base. Pirela then crushed an 0-2 pitch well over the left field fence for his fifth long ball of the season to put Trenton ahead to stay.
Shane Brown's two-out RBI single in the sixth against reliever Enosil Tejeda added an insurance run for the Thunder. Trenton relievers Cesar Cabral and Jeremy Bleich each pitched two scoreless innings to finish the win, with Bleich recording his second save of the season.
Trenton recorded 12 hits for the contest, with Corona leading the way by going 3-for-5 and Slade Heathcott, Pirela and Brown each collecting a pair of knocks. Akron had 13 hits on the night with Jose Ramirez and Ronny Rodriguez each having three.
Game three of the series will be played Thursday night, as the Thunder turn to left-hander Nik Turley (5-5, 4.40) against Aeros right-hander Jordan Cooper (3-2, 3.61). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR), 1490 AM (WBCB) and also streaming online begins at 6:50 pm.
