Altoona Curve News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT...: Altoona came out victorious, 5-4, on Tuesday night in an extra innings back-and-forth battle with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Adalberto Santos put the Curve back in front with a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it a 3-1 game. After New Hampshire took a one run lead with three runs in the top half of the ninth inning, Andy Vasquez knocked in a run with an RBI single to re-tie the game at four. Then the rains came and delayed the contest for an hour and 28 minutes with the Fisher Cats batting in the top of the 10th inning. Santos again delivered the big swing with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom half of the 10th to give the Curve their sixth straight victory. Kenn Kasparek (3-1) earned his third win of the season working 0.2 innings in relief.

CURVE/FISHER CATS SERIES: New Hampshire is in the midst of their first and only trip to Peoples Natural Gas Field this week. After the three-game series, the two teams have four games remaining all at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester July 25-28.

FOR ALTOONA: Eliecer Navarro will become the third player and second pitcher to make his Double-A debut for the Curve in the past week when he takes the mound tonight in the second game of the three-game series. Navarro was the epitome of a tough-luck loser for High-A Bradenton, going 1-9 in his 13 games (11 starts) but boasting a 2.86 ERA. Opponents were hitting just .235 off the David, Panama native before his promotion to Double-A and was killer at home (1.78 ERA in six games, five starts). He'll also be just the second left-handed pitcher to make a start for the Curve this season when he takes the mound tonight (Francisco Liriano made the other start). Navarro turned in seven quality starts this season in High-A and completed at least six innings in nine of his 11 starts this year. For more on Navarro, see page two.

FOR NEW HAMPSHIRE: RHP Deck McGuire makes his first start of the season against the Curve. The right-hander spent last season with New Hampshire and went 1-0 in his only start against the Curve tossing seven-shutout innings and allowing only four hits on July 28 at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. McGuire's seven innings were against the Curve in 2012 were a season-high.

TELL ME WHEN TO GO: The Curve stole three more bases on Sunday night in the win over Trenton and recorded 11 steals in the three-game set with the Trenton without being caught. Newly promoted centerfielder Gregory Polanco has had a hand in that total, swiping three bags so far with the Curve. He swiped 24 this season for Bradenton before being promoted and thieved 40 last season with West Virginia. As a team, the Curve have 67 steals, which is third-most in the 12-team Eastern League. Binghamton leads the league with 78.

NO JUNE SWOON: Altoona is riding is a season-high six-game winning streak and also won four games in a row earli- er in the month. The Curve are now 10-3 in the month of June. During the current run, Altoona has out-scored their opponents 29-11. In the month of June, Altoona has posted its best team batting average thus far for any month, batting .268 through the first 13 games. The club hit .231 in April (25 games) and .230 in May (30 games).

LET'S GET IT STARTED: Altoona's starters have not allowed an earned run in the last four-games at Peoples Natural Gas Field. The first three came against the Thunder and the most recent against the Fisher Cats. Casey Sadler tossed six scoreless on Friday night, Nick Kingham 5.2 scoreless on Saturday, Jameson Taillon allowed one unearned run in five innings on Sunday, David Bromberg tossed seven shutout on Tuesday. The trio allowed just 17 hits in 23.2 innings, walked a total of four and whiffed 24.

SAN-TOASTED: Third baseman Adalberto Santos remained hot yesterday knocking in a season-high three runs including the game-winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning. He also hit a two-run homer in the eighth. The third baseman is 9-for-21 (.429) with six runs scored, a home run, and three RBI during his current six-game hitting streak.

CLOSE CALLS: Altoona has been very good in one-run games this season, posting a record of 11-6 and a sterling 8-2 mark in those contests at home this season. During the team's current six-game winning streak, the Curve are 2-0 in one run games and also picked up a win in a two-run contest on June 12 in New Britain.

EXTRA, EXTRA: The game last night against New Hampshire was the fourth extra inning contest that the Curve have played this season. Altoona is 3-1 in those games with the lone loss coming against the Harrisburg Senators on April 13.

WALK THIS WAY: The walk-off single by Adalberto Santos on Tuesday night in the tenth inning was the third walk-off hit by the Curve this season. Andrew Lambo, now with Triple-A Indianapolis, was responsible for the first two; picking up a single on April 16 vs. Richmond and a home run on June 4 vs. Reading.

RELOADING: CF Gregory Polanco made a nice statement in his Double- A debut on Friday, going 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI and a stolen base. Polanco was selected to the Florida State League mid-season All-Star team before being promoted to Altoona and was the fourth-best prospect in the system entering 2013 according to Baseball America. The Santo Domingo, D.R. native is coming off a banner year for Low-A West Virginia in 2012 where he was named the Topps South Atlantic League Player of the Year as well as the Pirates Organizational Minor League Player of the Year.
