Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - The Great Lakes Loons (41-51, 14-8) and the Burlington Bees (33-53, 7-14) were tied heading into the eighth inning on Friday night, but the Bees scored seven runs in the eighth to break the game open and knocked off the Loons, 10-3, to win the last game of a three-game series at Dow Diamond.
James Campbell (0-1) started the eighth for the Loons and allowed four of the first five Burlington hitters to reach base before getting lifted for Luis Meza. Meza entered with the bases loaded and Great Lakes trailing 3-2 with one out. He allowed the first two hitters to single and walked the next two, allowing four more runs to score to extend the lead to 7-2.
The Bees scored another because of a fielding error by Loons first baseman Aaron Miller and added the last run of the frame when three-hitter Andrew Ray hit into a fielder's choice. Campbell was credited with four runs on three hits and a walk in 1/3 innings. Meza gave up three runs (two earned) on two hits and two walks in 2/3 innings.
"Tonight's game, that's baseball," Loons manager Razor Shines said. "We've been through this before. I've see it countless times where games get away and there's really nothing you can do to stop the bleeding. But we're going to be on the other end of some of these games too."
Great Lakes opened the scoring in the third inning. Leadoff hitter Robbie Garvey was hit by a pitch and stole second base before coming home on a Malcolm Holland single. Holland eventually scored when Bees starting pitcher Pat Lowery made an errant throw on an attempt to pick Corey Seager off first base.
Lowery threw 2 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits, while walking three and striking out two.
The Loons started the Dodgers' 2013 second-round draft pick Tom Windle. Windle had the best outing of his young professional career, pitching five scoreless innings and giving up just two hits. The University of Minnesota product struck out seven and walked one.
"I went out there with a little more confidence and a little more feel than I had after that month off," Windle said. "I just tried to take a better approach and throw more strikes. At times, I overthrew it, but I made some good pitches when I needed to and a couple things went my way when they hit the ball hard."
"He gave us five shutout innings," Shines added. "Any time you get five shutout innings, that's outstanding and tonight he was just that. He moved the ball in and out, up and down, along with a good breaking ball. He had command of all of his pitches; we were real happy with his work tonight."
Burlington got 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief from Daniel Hurtado. Hurtado did not give up a hit, while striking out two and walking one. Joey Krehbiel (3-5) threw the last three innings of the game for the Bees, giving up one run on three hits, to get the win. Krehbiel struck out two and walked one.
Great Lakes added a run in the eighth inning when Corey Seager came home on a wild pitch. Seager was 3-for-4 in the game with a double.
"Tonight they kind of mixed it up on me," Seager said. "I saw of bunch of fastballs early and off-speed stuff later in the game. So I just had to make some adjustments and I had some success."
"Seager is a special player and players like him do things like that," Shines said. "It doesn't surprise me when he goes 3-for-4, but it does surprise me when he goes 0-for-4, because he's that talented. He's just a special talent and people better get out here quick, because he's not going to be here long."
Burlington scored another run in the road half of the ninth. Six-hitter Chance Ross doubled and scored because of a Miller fielding error. Ross was 2-for-3, with two doubles and two walks, on the night.
Cannizaro and catcher Sandy Martinez also had multi-hit games for the Bees. Miller had a multi-hit game for Great Lakes, with two singles.
The Loons open a three-game series against the Peoria Chiefs (48-40, 10-11) on Saturday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Great Lakes is expected to start Miguel Sulbaran (5-2, 3.18 ERA), who has allowed just three earned runs over 33 innings in his last six appearances. Peoria's projected starter is Silfredo Garcia (2-1, 4.86). There is a postgame Fireworks Loontacular, powered by Dow Corning, and it is Loons Latino Night at Dow Diamond.
The Great Lakes Loons are a seventh-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
