Peoria Chiefs News Release
Lansing, MI- The Peoria Chiefs scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning but allowed two in the bottom of the inning in a 4-3 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts on Friday night. The loss gives Lansing the series and drops the Chiefs to 9-10 in the second half and 48-40 on the season.
The game was scoreless through five innings as Peoria's Chris Perry and Lansing's Ben White matched zeroes. Perry, in his Chiefs debut, struck out nine Lugnuts through five innings and allowed just three hits. White gave up just one hit and one walk through the first five innings before allowing a hit but getting out of the sixth unscathed.
Thomas Lee took over for Perry in the sixth and Dalton Pompey led off with a single and stolen base for Lansing. Emilio Guerrero walked and the Chiefs couldn't turn a double play on a grounder to second, settling for just one out. With runners on the corners, Kevin Patterson grounded to first for a potential inning-ending double play. However, the throw to second by Jeremy Schaffer hit Dwight Smith Jr. in the back and bounced into left field as Pompey scored the first run of the game. After a strikeout and a hit batter loaded the bases, an error by Ildemaro Vargas at shortstop put the Lugnuts on top 2-0.
The Chiefs responded immediately in the seventh as Jordan Walton led off with a single and Breyvic Valera singled with one out. Vargas made amends with a double to the wall in left-center to score both runners and tie the game 2-2. Tucker Donohue replaced White and a wild pitch moved Vargas to third. CJ McElroy flew out to left and Vargas touched home plate with his palm before the tag was applied to give the Chiefs a 3-2 lead. Lansing manager John Tamrago Jr. argued the call at the plate and was ejected from the game.
Joe Scanio took over on the hill in the bottom of the seventh and immediately retired the first two Lugnuts. Guerrero drew a walk with two down to put the tying run on base. Smith launched his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot, to the right-field berm to put Lansing on top 4-3. Donohue retired the Chiefs in order in the eighth while Arik Sikula did the same in the ninth to preserve the 4-3 Lansing win. Smith denied Valera of a basehit with a sliding catch in left field on the final play of the game.
Perry struck out a career-high nine over five shutout innings in his Chiefs debut and fifth career start as a professional. He allowed three hits and walked one. Lee allowed two runs, one earned on one hit, one walk and one hit batter. He struck out two in one inning. Scanio (2-2) allowed two runs on one hit and one walk in one inning of play in the blown save. Zach Russell gave up one hit in one scoreless inning.
