Snappers Outlast Captains in Another Close One
July 12, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI - Brett Vertigan hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning, driving in what proved to be the winning run for the Beloit Snappers, who downed the Lake County Captains, 3-2, in Midwest League action on Thursday night at Pohlman Field with a crowd of 638 in attendance.
After winning the first two games of this series, the Snappers are now 57-33 (14-6 in the second half). The Captains now have a record of 35-52 (12-8 in the second half).
Beloit entered the eighth trailing 2-1, but the makings of a comeback began with a pair of singles. A walk loaded the bases and pinch-hitter Aaron Shipman drew another free pass, forcing in the tying run. Next came Vertigan's go-ahead, sacrifice fly off Jack Wagoner (2-2). Kris Hall's (3-1) scoreless eighth inning earned him the win and Austin House's perfect ninth upped his save total to six.
Lake County took advantage of a pair of defensive miscues for unearned runs in the second and the fifth. The first one came in when Eric Gonzalez doubled, stole third and came across when the throw to third was missed. Three innings later, they caught another break. This time, it came after a two-out single by Yhoxian Medina. When Todd Hankins then laid down a bunt, a throwing error allowed Medina to race around and score for a 2-0 lead.
Christopher Bostick got a run for the Snappers in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double. For a while, that looked like it might be the extent of their offensive output, but Beloit wasn't about to let this one slip away.
The final game of this series is set for 7:00pm on Friday night. RHP Vince Voiro (5-3, 3.18 ERA) will go for the Snappers and LHP Luis DeJesus (3-9, 6.02 ERA) for the Captains. This night promises to be an unpredictable one, thanks to BirdZerk!. The top traveling act in baseball will be at Pohlman Field all night long, keeping everyone on the edge of their seat. He'll be interacting with fans, players, even umpires during the game. BirdZerk! will ensure everyone leaves the ballpark happy.
