Kane County Cougars News Release
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - In a back-and-forth battle on Friday night at Coveleski Regional Stadium, the Kane County Cougars stayed winless in their three-game set against the South Bend Silver Hawks by falling in a 5-4 contest.
South Bend (58-33, 14-8) took the lead in the ballgame initially as they grabbed a tally in the bottom of the second. Breland Almadova reached on an error and scored on a bouncer hit back to the pitcher's mound by Alex Glenn. Jose Rosario fielded and flipped to first but Dan Vogelbach lost the ball in the sun, and it rolled down the right field line, giving the Silver Hawks a 1-0 cushion.
Kyle Winkler couldn't hang on to the lead as the Cougars (34-52, 4-16) evened the score at 1-1 in the third. Gioskar Amaya reached on a one-out triple and scored on a groundout off the bat of Albert Almora. South Bend reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth with Socrates Brito tripling home Fidel Pena before scoring on a passed ball.
Oliver Zapata helped take Rosario off the hook as he blasted a three-run homer in the sixth inning off Winkler. Jeimer Candelario and Willson Contreras both scored which put the Cougars on top. Rosario lasted six frames while striking out a season-high nine hitters.
Justin Amlung (3-4) relieved Rosario but coughed up the lead. Brito doubled down the left field to start the frame and scored on an opposite-field two-run bomb off the bat of Rudy Flores. Blake Perry (6-4) didn't allow a hit in his two innings of relief while Enrique Burgos (S, 9) finished the ballgame with a perfect ninth.
The Cougars stay on the road to battle the West Michigan Whitecaps on Saturday night from Fifth Third Ballpark at 6:00 central time. Right-hander Tayler Scott (4-4) will get the start for the Cougars. The Cougars return to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Wednesday, July 17, to take on the Great Lakes Loons at 6:30 p.m. For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
