Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - A go-ahead home run by Dwight Smith, Jr. gave the Lansing Lugnuts (5-16, 37-43) a 4-3 see-saw win over the Peoria Chiefs (10-11, 48-40) in front of 8,958 fans at Cooley Law School Stadium on Friday night.
Down 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Lansing shortstop Emilio Guerrero drew a two-out walk from reliever Joe Scanio (Loss, 2-2) and Smith, Jr. followed with a two-run homer off the ivy wall in right field, putting the Lugnuts right back ahead, 4-3.
The Lugs surrendered a 2-0 lead in the top of the inning on a two-run double by Peoria's Ildemaro Vargas that tied the game before Vargas scored on a controversial sacrifice fly to put the Chiefs up, 3-2.
Vargas tagged from third base and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of CJ McElroy, beating out a bang-bang play at the plate. Lansing manager John Tamargo, Jr. was promptly ejected while disputing the call.
Both starters received no-decisions as all the runs scored from the sixth inning and later.
Ben White lasted 6.1 innings for Lansing, allowing three runs to the Chiefs on five hits. White struck out five and issued one walk before he ran into trouble in Peoria's three-run seventh inning. Tucker Donahue (Win, 3-2) earned the win with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief despite allowing an inherited runner to score.
Peoria starter Chris Perry pitched five scoreless innings in his Midwest League debut, striking out a career-high nine batters with just one walk allowed. Lansing managed just three hits against the right-hander.
The six-game homestand continues for Lansing as the Burlington Bees come to town for three games. The series opens up with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on Saturday night with Daniel Norris (0-4, 5.59) on the mound for the Lugnuts against Bees' lefty Tyler DeLoach (2-2, 3.21). Saturday's game will feature LAFCU Fireworks postgame.
