Great Falls Voyagers News Release
GREAT FALLS, Mont. (August 2, 2015)Â - The Great Falls Voyagers scored two runs in the ninth, but left the tying run at second as they fell 7-6 to the Helena Brewers Sunday afternoon at Centene Stadium, ending their eight-game winning streak against Helena.
With Great Falls (4-2, 21-21) down three heading into the ninth and the first two batters of the inning retired, things looked bleak for the Voyagers. Casey Schroeder got things going for Great Falls, hitting his first pro homer.
Two walks later, Jackson Glines singled to cut the deficit to one, and move the tying run to second. However, Junior Rincon picked up a strikeout to finish things off for Helena (2-4, 18-24) to snuff out the rally.
After Zack Erwin set down the Brewers in order in the top of the first, Great Falls grabbed the lead in their half of the frame. Landon Lassiter started things off by drawing a walk from Jake Drossner (2-1), then scored a couple batters later on a Johan Cruz single.
The score stayed that way until the fifth. Mitch Ghelfi gave Helena the lead with a two-run single off of Brandon Magallones (2-2), then a third run scored when Carlos Belonis stole home.
The first inning run was the lone tally Great Falls could manage against Brewer starter Jake Drossner who went five innings, striking out a career-high nine.
Helena added another run to their cushion in the sixth, as Ghelfi added his third RBI of the afternoon on a ground out.
Great Falls pulled a run in their half of the sixth. Helena made an error to allow one to score, then Ryan Jones doubled home a second run.
The two teams traded runs over the final couple of innings, as Helena scored two in the eighth, including one on a Jake Gatewood homer. Great Falls answered with one in the home half, as Dante Flores drew a bases-loaded walk.
The run that proved to be the difference came in the top of the ninth, as Steven Karkenny launched his team-leading sixth homer of the season.
The Voyagers will have the next three days off for the All-Star break, and will return to action on Thursday when they begin a seven-game road trip with the opener of a four-game set with the Orem Owlz. In Thursday's series opener, Great Falls will send right-hander Matt Ball (1-3, 5.89) to the mound, while Orem's starter has yet to be announced. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m., and coverage will begin at 7:00 on 1400 AM KXGF and gfvoyagers.com.
