Gray, Choice Lead Cats to 8-4 Win
April 7, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sonny Gray tossed six shutout innings in his first start of the 2013 season, and Michael Choice belted a tiebreaking grand slam in the seventh inning, leading the Cats to a 8-4 victory over the Las Vegas 51s on Sunday afternoon at Raley Field.
Gray allowed a single to the leadoff batter of the game, and did not surrender another hit until the top of the sixth. He struck out four and walked three-throwing 53 of his 84 pitches for strikes-but did not figure in the decision.
Gray left with a 2-0 lead, but Las Vegas tied the game with a two-run seventh. In the bottom of the frame, however, Choice broke the game open with his first Triple-A home run, a line drive into the Jackson Rancheria Home Run Terrace behind the left field wall. Michael Taylor followed with a solo shot, and Stephen Vogt hit a solo home run of his own later in the seventh.
Las Vegas starter Carlos Torres (0-1) suffered the loss, despite surrendering just two runs-both earned-in 5.2 innings of work.
Vogt and Jemile Weeks each finished with three hits for Sacramento. Weeks has now hit safely in all four games this season, while Vogt's multi-hit game came in his first action since the Athletics acquired him in a trade with Tampa Bay on April 5.
The Cats are back in action Monday evening, as they open a four-game set against the Tacoma Rainiers on Throwback Monday presented by Cache Creek. Sacramento's Bruce Billings (0-0, no ERA) is scheduled to pitch against Tacoma right-hander D.J. Mitchell (0-0, no ERA), with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. at Raley Field.
