Today's Game: The RedHawks will look to begin the season with a road series win when they wrap things up in Memphis starting at 1:35 p.m. Brett Oberholtzer makes his season debut on the mound for the RedHawks and will face last year's 19th overall pick in the draft, Michael Wacha.
Last Night: A day after struggling to keep Memphis off the board, three RedHawks pitchers combined to limit the Redbirds to one run and five hits in a 3-1 victory. Jarred Cosart allowed a run in the first inning, but held the Redbirds scoreless over his next three frames. Josh Zeid (W, 1-0) tossed a scoreless fifth, and John Ely finished things by tossing four scoreless innings to earn his first career save at any level. The RedHawks scored twice in the first inning, thanks to back-to-back two-out RBI singles by Jimmy Paredes and Marc Krauss. Krauss drove in another run in the sixth via a sac fly. Memphis pitcher Seth Maness cruised after the first inning, but he took the loss in his Triple-A debut. Maness (0-1) allowed three runs and eight hits with six strikeouts and no walks over seven innings.
Today's Probable Pitchers: Brett Oberholtzer looks to continue his strong finish to 2012 as he takes the mound for the first time this season....Oberholtzer joined the RedHawks permanently in late June last season, going 5-7 with a 4.52 ERA in 15 starts...During each of his last five starts, Oberholtzer pitched at least 6.2 innings and allowed two runs or less (2.02 ERA), leading him to be named the team's pitcher of the month for August...The lefty does a good job throwing strikes, walking one batter or less in 10 of his 15 Triple-A starts and as well as in 17 of his 28 starts overall...Before joining the RedHawks last season, Oberholtzer was a Texas League All-Star with Corpus Christi (13 starts, 5-3, 4.21 ERA). In his final four starts with the Hooks he went 3-0 with 1.40 ERA...Oberholtzer faced Memphis twice last season, winning at home but losing on the road. In his lone previous start at AutoZone Park, Oberholtzer surrendered six runs over six innings and gave up three home runs.
There will be no designated "second starter" following Oberholtzer during today's game.
Against the Redbirds: 2013: 2-1 2012: 8-8 All-time: 127-117 In Memphis: 57-76
These teams split last year's season series...The RedHawks hit .290 as a team. Jimmy Paredes hit .361 and Fernando Martinez collected five homers and 18 RBI over 15 games...Despite hitting .257 for the season (last in PCL), the Redbirds hit .306 against OKC pitching...Memphis scored 20 or more runs in a game twice, including a 24-7 romp on July 22. The Redbirds hit two grand slams in one inning, and it set a RedHawks record for most runs allowed in a game...Friday night's Game 2 win snapped a seven-game losing streak at AutoZone Park...OKC has not won the season series against Memphis since 2007.
First Time For Everything: After pitching the final four innings of last night's win, John Ely earned his first career save. It was just his second relief outing in 133 career Minor League appearances and his first since making his professional debut on June 29, 2007 with the Great Falls Voyagers (Rookie-Chicago White Sox).
Long Time Coming: After collecting two RBI in 22 games with the RedHawks last season, Marc Krauss drove in two of the team's three runs last night. It was his first multi-RBI game since a six-RBI game for Double-A Corpus Christi on August 4, 2012.
Keeping it in the Park: Going back to last season, the RedHawks have allowed just six dingers over the last 26 contests, spanning 228 IP. Opponents have not left the park in 12 consecutive games, spanning 103 consecutive innings. The last player to go yard against the RedHawks was Diory Hernandez of the Iowa Cubs in the 8th inning on August 26, 2012.
Hit King: Jimmy Paredes is off to a hot start, going 5-for-9. His three doubles are tied for the league lead. In 2012 Paredes set a new single-season team record with 161 hits, and what's more remarkable is he did it in 124 games. He notched 52 multi-hit games and also led the team in doubles (28), triples (7), runs (92), and stolen bases (37). Paredes has recorded multi-hit games in each of the last two contests.
Running Into Trouble: Through the first three games, the RedHawks have had four baserunners picked off and two others caught stealing.
Close Calls: With an 8-7 victory Friday night, it should be no surprise the RedHawks won their first game of 2013 by one run. Last season they tied with Nashville for the most one-run wins in the PCL (28) and had the best winning percentage in one-run games (.609).
Nice To See You Again: Thirteen players on the current roster spent time with the RedHawks in 2012. Three players have been on the roster at some point during each of the last two seasons.
Melting Pot: Twelve players on the RedHawks roster came to the Astros via trade, including five acquired since Jeff Luhnow was named Astros General Manager in December, 2011. Four others were claimed off waivers since that time. Over half (13) of the players on the current roster were not with the Astros organization prior to Jan. 1, 2012. Only five were originally drafted/signed by HOU.
Recent Transactions: Yesterday the Astros recalled RedHawks pitcher Dallas Keuchel, who has been replaced on the roster by LHP Kyle Hallock from Low-A Quad Cities. Hallock tossed a scoreless inning in his season debut Thursday night.
