Oklahoma City Comets News Release
MEMPHIS - The Oklahoma City RedHawks (3-1) exploded for five runs in the top of the 11th inning, sending the RedHawks to a 14-10 victory over the Memphis Redbirds in a wild game before 7,534 at AutoZone Park Sunday afternoon.
With the score tied 9-9 in the 11th, the RedHawks had none on and two out. After Che-Hsuan Lin walked, Cody Clark followed with a single. Facing a full count against Barret Browning (0-1), Robbie Grossman delivered a single into center field to put the RedHawks in the lead.
Jake Elmore followed with another RBI single, and Trevor Crowe capped the rally with a three-run homer into the Memphis bullpen to make it 14-9.
Elmore finished 5-for-6 with three RBI, including his first home run of the season. Grossman reached base safely five times, adding three walks to his two hits.
Brock Peterson homered to lead off the bottom of the inning for Memphis, but the Redbirds never seriously threatened a comeback. Peterson's home run was the first one allowed by the RedHawks in 13 games dating back to last season and ended a stretch of 113 consecutive innings of keeping opponents in the park.
Memphis had took control of the game during the early stages of the game, jumping out to a five-run lead through five innings. However, the RedHawks scored three times in the sixth, setting the stage for back-and-forth affair down the stretch.
Down 7-5 in the eighth, the RedHawks had none on with two out. Two walks and single loaded the bases, and Brandon Laird followed with a game-tying, two-run single. Jimmy Paredes then followed with an RBI single to put the RedHawks in front at 8-7.
Memphis responded with its own clutch two-out hit in the bottom of the inning. With runners at second and third, Kolten Wong lined a single to right to score the pair and put Memphis back in the lead.
Marc Krauss drew a leadoff walk to begin the ninth and was replaced by pinch-runner Ruben Sosa. Sosa advanced to second base on a wild pitch and then to third on a ground out. Lin then sent a ground ball to third, but David Freese's throw home was off-line, allowing Sosa to score and tie the game.
Still tied with two outs in the top of the 10th, Laird doubled, and Paredes followed with a single. Laird was thrown out at the plate by Memphis left fielder Justin Christian to keep the game tied.
Before the late-game drama, the RedHawks took an early 1-0 in the top of the second after a sac fly by Lin, but it was short-lived. Memphis answered in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double to tie the game.
The Redbirds went in front in the third, putting three runs on the board. Freese drove in the go-ahead run, and Peterson and Christian added RBIs as well.
Krauss connected on his first home run of the season in the fourth to pull the RedHawks within 4-2.
In the fifth, the Redbirds put up another three-run frame. Freese connected with his second RBI single, and Christian drove in two more to give Memphis some breathing room at 7-2.
The RedHawks were able to respond in their next at-bat, scoring three times with two outs. After Lin scored on a wild pitch, Elmore drilled a two-run homer to left field to pull the RedHawks within 7-5.
Although credited with a blown save, RedHawks reliever Jose Valdez (1-0) tossed 2.2 scoreless innings to earn his first win since Apr. 12, 2011. After starting pitcher Brett Oberholtzer surrendered seven runs over 4.1 innings, four RedHawks relievers gave up just three over the final 6.2 frames.
Winners of three straight, the RedHawks will continue their road trip in Nashville Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. on AM 1340 "The Game", 1340thegame.com, or through the IHeartRadio mobile app.
