Aces Top Sky Sox 14-1 to Split Series

For the first time this season the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (2-2) gave up more than five runs in a game and fell to the Reno Aces (2-2), 14-1, to split the series with Reno on 50 cent Hot Dog Day at Security Service Field in front of 5,817 fans.

Ace's starting pitcher Tyler Skaggs (W, 1-0) combined with reliever Warner Madrigal to shutout the Sky Sox for eight innings before former Sox pitcher Will Harris came on in the ninth and gave up and RBI to Corey Dickerson. Colorado Springs' first baseman Ben Paulsen and shortstop Tommy Manzella led the team with two hits. Manzella returned to the lineup a day after leaving the game with a head injury which he sustained on a foul bunt.

While the Sky Sox' offense was held in check the Reno Aces had their offense clicking on all cylinders. They began the scoring in the top of the fourth, against starting pitcher Nick Schmidt (L, 0-1) when Brad Snyder, Tyler Bortnick and Ed Easley hit back-to-back-to-back doubles to give the Aces' the 4-0 lead.

Colorado Springs reliever Josh Outman came in at the top of the fifth and threw two straight scoreless innings to keep the deficit at four. Outman has not given up an earned run in six innings over two appearances this season while striking out 10.

Reno struck again in the seventh on a Mark Teahen double and a Matt Davidson single. A batter later, second baseman Tyler Bortnick hit a home run to increase the lead to 10. The Aces' tacked on a run in the eighth on a Kila Ka'aihue tater and three more in the ninth to make the score 14-0.

The Sky Sox' offense showed signs of life in the bottom of the ninth, when they loaded the bases on singles by Matt McBride, Tyler Colvin, and Ben Paulsen. Dickerson came on to pinch-hit for the pitcher and drove in McBride on a single to score the team's only run of the game.

Tomorrow the Sky Sox welcome in the Tucson Padres for the first contest of a four-game series. The Sox send veteran Aaron Cook to the mound to face Tucson's Keyvius Sampson at 6:35 p.m.
