Reno Aces News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-Tyler Skaggs was stellar in his 2013 debut, and Aces batters combined for 18 hits, en route to an 14-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Security Service Field.
The win secured Reno's first series split of the season.
Skaggs, ranked the D-backs No. 1 prospect by Baseball America, earned the win for Reno. He threw 6.0 scoreless innings, giving up only four hits and recording four strikeouts.
The Aces offense was sparked by a two RBI double off the bat of Brad Snyder in the top of the fourth. A pair of doubles by Tyler Bortnick and Ed Easley pushed across two more runs in the frame to give Reno a 4-0 lead.
Following two scoreless innings, the Aces offense came alive again in the seventh inning, tacking on six more runs. Mark Teahen's RBI double began the onslaught, and was followed by a two RBI single from Matt Davidson a couple of batters later. In his first start of 2013, Tyler Bortnick slammed a three run homer to left field, extending Reno's lead to 10-0.
A solo home run by Kila Ka'aihue, his first of the season, added another run for Reno in the top of the eighth. The offense continued to perform through ninth, adding three runs in the last frame to bring the Aces' final run count to 14.
Reliever Will Harris, who was added to Reno's roster today after he was claimed off waivers from Oakland, gave up the lone run of the game for Colorado Springs in the bottom of the ninth, on an RBI single to right field.
Nick Schmidt was charged with the loss for the Sky Sox. He gave up four runs, all earned, on eight hits in 3.1 innings of work.
The Aces now travel to Salt Lake for a four game series against the Bees at Spring Mobile Ballpark. RHP Nelson Figueroa (0-0, No ERA) gets the nod for Reno Monday night, while the Bees will counter with RHP Orangel Arenas (0-0, No ERA). First pitch is set for 5:35 p.m. PT, and all the action can be heard live on Fox Sports 630 AM.
Reno returns to Aces Ballpark for the 2013 home opener on Friday, April 12. Tickets are on sale now at RenoAces.com, by calling (775) 334-7000 or by visiting the Aces Ballpark Ticket Office.
