Texas Stars News Release
GRAND GRAPIDS, MI - Matt Fraser scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season and also set up a Colton Sceviour goal, but the Texas Stars fell short 3-2 to the Grand Rapids Griffins Saturday night at Van Andel Arena.
The Griffins jumped out to an early lead courtesy of Francis Pare's ninth goal of the season at 3:37 of the first period. Pare came away with the puck during a scramble in the crease and lifted a shot over the fallen Jack Campbell for a 1-0 Grand Rapids lead. Texas responded at the midway point of the frame when Maxime Fortunus unleashed a shot-pass aimed for Matt Fraser at the left side of the goal. Fraser calmy redirected the puck behind goalie Petr Mrazek and into the gaping net at 10:20 to tie the game; it was Fraser's team-leading seventh goal of the season. Fraser than turned provider three minutes later as he sent a pass across the crease to a wide-open Colton Sceviour, who finished off the bang-bang play at 13:46 to put the Stars ahead 2-1.
Grand Rapids pulled level just 2:27 into the second period on a fortuitous bounce. Brian Lashoff's shot from the point took a massive deflection and arched up over a screened Campbell and fell into the net. The Griffins then went ahead 3-2 at 12:20 on a disputed goal from Triston Grant. Nathan Paetsch's shot from the point missed wide left, but came back off the end boards and was knocked in by a fallen Grant. Although Texas argued the decision to award a goal, the play was not reviewed by the referee.
In the third period, both teams had power play opportunities, but neither team could find the net again as the Griffins finished off a 3-2 win to snap the Stars three-game winning streak and four-game road winning streak.
Petr Mrazek stopped 26-of-28 shots to record the victory in goal for Grand Rapids, while Jack Campbell had 33 saves on 36 shots in the losing effort for Texas. The Griffins out-shot the Stars 36-28 in the game and went 0-for-3 on the power play; Texas was 0-for-4 with the man-advantage.
The Texas Stars continue their six-game road trip with their third game in three days on Sunday, December 2nd as they square off with the Peoria Rivermen at 5:05 p.m. at Carver Arena. The Stars next home game is scheduled for Friday, December 7th as they host the Houston Aeros for a 7:30 p.m. faceoff.
