
Heat Defeat Bulldogs 5-1, Remain in Top Spot

Abbotsford, BC "" The Abbotsford Heat defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs 5-1 on Friday in front of 5,145 fans at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC). The Heat extended their home point streak to 11 games and retained top spot in the American Hockey League with 13 wins and 30 points through 19 games.
The Heat scored a season-high four power play goals and out-shot the Bulldogs 28-16. Ben Walter produced a goal and an assist and now stands as the all-time franchise leader in scoring with 74 points in 93 games as a Heat player.
The Heat opened the scoring on a five-on-three power play at 6:50 of the first period with Ben Street's fifth goal of the season. The goal was set up by Sven Baertschi and Paul Byron. Street, a Coquitlam native, is now tied for the Heat team lead with 17 points.
Ben Walter extended the Heat lead to 2-0 just 32 seconds later on the ensuing five-on-four power play. Walter's fourth goal of the season was assisted by T.J. Brodie.
Heat Captain Quintin Laing extended the lead to 3-0 with his fourth of the season at 4:03 of the second period. The goal was assisted by line-mates Brett Olson and Ben Street.
Roman Horak ended a nine-game goal drought at 8:12 of the second period. Ben Walter and T.J. Brodie assisted. Horak's eighth goal of the season places him two goals behind the AHL leader.
After surrendering a short-handed goal to Gabriel Dumont, the Heat made the score 5-1 with Steve McCarthy's power play goal at 6:34 of the third period.
Barry Brust stopped 15 of 16 shots and has now won all six of his starts for the Heat this season.
The Heat scored four power play goals on nine power play opportunities and allowed one short-handed goal. Abbotsford killed off all four Hamilton power plays, keeping the Heat penalty kill at the top of the AHL.
The Heat play the Hamilton Bulldogs again Saturday night at the AESC. Fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to the game on the annual Pucks "ËN Paws night.
