Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Rio Rancho, NM 12/5/08 - The Amarillo Gorillas ceded six third-period goals and were held in check offensively by New Mexico as the Scorpions won Friday night, 8-2, at the Santa Ana Star Center.
New Mexico got on the board first, edging out to a 2-0 lead by the first intermission. John Mazzei and Seth Leonard got the early goals against Amarillo starting netminder Mike Gorman, putting the Gorillas down after twenty minutes.
The two teams battled to a scoreless second period, with New Mexico's Jason Wolfe and Gorman exchanging saves heading into the final frame.
The third period proved to be a troublesome frame for the Gorillas, as they found themselves on a 5-on-3 penalty kill early in the period. Chris Robertson scored for the Scorpions while on the two-man advantage, followed only 43 seconds later by a 5-on-4 Mazzei goal to extend the New Mexico advantage. After a Neil Smith minor penalty, the Scorpions went on the power play again, scoring quickly through a Robertson rebound tally, giving the hosts a 5-0 lead.
Amarillo responded with two goals from Joe Guenther-his team-leading ninth and tenth of the season, respectively-to put the Gorillas within three, 5-2. The New Mexico offense proved to be too much for Amarillo late, however, as Torren Delforte scored with under seven minutes left in the period. Mazzei followed with his third of the night 36 seconds later, followed in turn with Leonard's second of the game 51 seconds afterwards.
New Mexico's six third period goals stand as the most given up by Amarillo in a single period this season. Gorman (3-6-0) made 41 saves in the effort for Amarillo (5-13-0).
