December 5, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-John Mazzei's hat trick helped lead the Scorpions to an 8-2 victory over Amarillo on Friday night. The eight goals, including six in the third period are season highs for New Mexico.
The Scorpions came out like gangbusters in the opening period. Andrew Smale worked hard along the boards to create space and a shot for himself. Though it was saved Jamie Herrington picked up the rebound and slid a perfect pass to John Mazzei. Mazzei threw the puck into the open net, making it 1-0.
The hottest Scorpion over the past five games has been Seth Leonard. The crafty forward walked the puck from the corner and created his own space in front of the net, scoring his 10th goal of the season.
After a scoreless second period, the teams combined for eight third period goals. Chris Robertson made it 3-0 with a two-man advantage goal. On the ensuing five-on-four power play, Mazzei scored his second goal of the evening 1:37 into the third period.
The Scorpions went back to the power play and Robertson scored his second tally of the night. The three power play goals for New Mexico tied a season high.
Joe Guenther put Amarillo on the board with two goals. The first goal ended Jason Wolfe's shutout streak at 110:01, dating back to November 26th.
Back came the Scorpions, as Torren Delforte picked up a rebound goal, his first goal in the past nine games. Mazzei grabbed his first career hat trick with his sixth goal of the season at the 14:09 mark of the third period. Leonard then finished the night's scoring with his second goal of the contest.
Wolfe looked great in net for a second straight game. He totaled 36 saves in the contest en route to his fourth victory of the season.
