Gorillas Shatter One Record and Equal Another with Victory over Odessa
February 24, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Amarillo Gorillas News Release
AMARILLO, TX â It took a little longer than previously hoped, but the Amarillo Gorillas set a new Amarillo professional hockey record for wins in a season and tied another mark over the weekend.
The Amarillo Gorillas won their 32nd game (32-18-1) with a 6-0 blanking of the Odessa Jackalopes on Sunday night at The Jungle in the Amarillo Civic Center. The victory broke the previous record set by the 1998-99 Amarillo Rattlers of the Western Professional Hockey League.
Rookie Derek Hahn continued his outstanding play by the Gorillas with two goals and one assist. The RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) product fired his 18th and 19th goals of the season and will definitely be among those given strong consideration for Rookie of the Year in the Central Hockey League.
Dorian Anneck, Brian Pellerin, Neil Posillico and Ben Maidment had the other Amarillo goals, while goaltender Shawn Degagne turned aside all 30 shots he faced for the shutout. For Posillico it was his first goal as a professional when he tallied late in the second period.
The Gorillas shutout also tied the record for wins in a season on home ice of 19 set by the previously mentioned Rattlers squad. The next time the Gorillas will have a chance to eclipse that record will be on Tuesday, March 4 when they host the Lubbock Cotton Kings at 7 p.m.
GORILLAS FACE HOT GOALTENDING IN TWO LOSSES
Hot goaltending proved to be the downfall for the Amarillo Gorillas in two losses on the weekend.
On Friday night at The Jungle in front of more than 4,500 fans, the Gorillas dropped a 2-1 decision to the New Mexico Scorpions. Luciano Caravagio had a great game between the pipes for New Mexico and the only blemish on his record was a goal by Dorian Anneck in the second period from Derek Hahn and Henry Kuster.
On Saturday night at Ector County Coliseum in Odessa, goaltender Mike Gorman continued his mastery over Amarillo professional hockey teams over the past two seasons.
Gorman improved his mark to 7-2, including four shutouts as the Jackalopes dumped the Gorillas 4-1. It appeared early that Joe Ferras' charges might have solved Gorman when Brandon Carper scored on the power play to tie the game at 1-1. However that would be all the Gorillas could manage past the Jackalopes backstopper.
