New Mexico Scorpions News Release

ALBUQUERQUE – The Central Hockey League announced today that New Mexico Scorpions goalie Luciano Caravaggio has been named the league's Goalie of the Week for the week ending Sunday, Feb. 23. Caravaggio allowed one goal in two starts as the Scorpions won both of their games this weekend.

The 27 year-old native of Toronto, Ontario made 28 saves for his second shutout of the season in Saturday's 4-0 win over Wichita before a crowd of 8,862, the largest turnout of the season at Tingley Coliseum. Caravaggio turned aside 42 of 43 Amarillo attempts in a 2-1 decision over the Gorillas in the Texas Panhandle on Friday as the Scorpions finished their seven-game road trip with a 3-3-1 record.

"Looch has stepped up and played very well for us lately," said Scorpions Head Coach/Assistant General Manager Bill McDonald. "It's great to see him get the recognition he deserves. Hopefully he can keep it going as we try to build some consistency for the final few weeks of the season.

Caravaggio has a 17-13-2 record in 34 appearances this season, and is sixth in the CHL with a 2.67 GAA, .0002 ahead of Odessa's Mike Gorman for that sixth spot. He has allowed four goals in his last four starts and stopped 128 of 132 shots during that time. With Saturday's win, he tied former goalie and coach Tony Martino atop the franchise's all-time victory list with 54 to his credit.

The Scorpions begin a busy week tomorrow as they travel to El Paso for the first of four meetings with the Buzzards in 16 days. Faceoff is at 7:10 p.m. The game can be heard on SportsRadio 610 The Sports Animal beginning with Scorpions Pregame at 6:55 p.m. After tomorrow's game, the Scorpions return home to host Amarillo on Wednesday, Feb. 26.
