Saints Week in Review

February 24, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
San Angelo Saints News Release

Coming Up This Week – The Saints finally play at home this weekend – the team's first home games since February 1st. Friday the Saints host Amarillo and Saturday the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs come to town. On Friday the Saints will be giving away more than 20 valuable prizes donated by local advertisers during the game and Jumping Jack will perform. There is also a post-game party with the players after Friday's game. On Saturday the first 750 fans through the doors will get free Saints window clings.

Week In Review – The Saints went 1-1-0 this week with a road loss to Oklahoma City on Friday night and a road win over Fort Worth on Saturday.

Saints in the City – The Saints players continue to participate in Awards Ceremonies for all the San Angelo elementary schools' Accelerated Reader Programs. Saints players will then be back in our elementary schools for "Grades for Blades" programs for the February report cards. We also have players going out to talk to juvenile offenders at our area Juvenile Detention Center and visiting local hospitals.

February 21st / San Angelo 2 - Oklahoma City 9 / Despite being out-shot 23-7 in the 1st period, the Saints actually led the game twice thanks to their power play. Goals by Steve Roberts and Troy Mann had the Saints up 2-1 until the Blazers tied the game with just 26 seconds left in the period. In the 2nd period the much more physical Blazers took control with 3 goals by the line of Burton, Manning and Watson. Three more goals in the 3rd period made the game a rout as the Saints could not generate much offense. Only deceptively strong goaltending by Scott Reid and Bryce Wandler kept the score from being worse.

February 22nd / San Angelo 4 - Fort Worth 3 (SO) / The Saints opened the scoring in the 1st period with a short-handed goal by Trevor Weisgerber, but the Brahmas answered back on the same power-play to tie the score 1-1 heading into the 2nd period. The Saints dominated the 2nd period and got goals from Weisgerber and Ryan Reid for a 3-1 lead heading into the 3rd. But, the Brahmas scored twice early in the 3rd period to tie the game and force overtime. After a scoreless overtime, the game went to a shoot-out that took 11 shooters from each team to be decided. Kelly Miller finally scored the game-winner as Scott Reid stopped 9 of 11 Fort Worth shooters.

Playoff Picture – The Saints are starting to run out of time. With 37 points and only 11 games remaining they still trail 4 teams for the 4th and final playoff spot. Corpus Christi currently holds the 4th spot with 54 points with Lubbock (52 pts) and New Mexico (51 pts) hot on their heels. El Paso has 38 points. The Saints' faint hopes rest on the fact that they still have 3 games left against both Lubbock and Corpus Christi, and one with New Mexico.

Injury Report – Forward Cory Pecush missed Saturday's game after taking a big hit on Friday. Whether he will miss any more time is yet to be determined. Jan Jas and Jeff Cheeseman remain on Injured Reserve.
