CHL Honors Clayton, Caravaggio
February 24, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
Wichita center Travis Clayton and New Mexico goaltender Luciano Caravaggio have today been named the recipients of the Central Hockey League's Player and Goaltender of the Week for Week 19 of the CHL season. Clayton receives his second such honor of the season after being named CHL Player of the Week in Week 14, while Caravaggio becomes the third player from New Mexico to earn a weekly distinction, joining Chris Richards (CHL Player of the Week in Week 1) and Tyler Baines (CHL Player of the Week in Week 5).
Despite a difficult season for the Thunder, All-Star Clayton has continued to perform admirably for Wichita. In four games this week, Clayton's heroics led to three victories. His most impressive outing came Sunday, February 23rd, recording two goals (including the game winning goal with just nine seconds left in regulation) and an assist in a 6-5 win at Lubbock. The Saskatchewan native also recorded multiple point outings in wins over Odessa and El Paso. For the season, Clayton sits fifth in CHL scoring, and leads Wichita in goals, assists, points and plus/minus rating.
The New Mexico Scorpions are in a battle for a Southern Conference playoff berth, and recorded two crucial wins behind back-to-back fine performances from goaltender Luciano Caravaggio. Friday, February 21st in Amarillo, the Toronto native turned aside 42 of 43 Gorilla shots in a 2-1 win, then made 28 saves Saturday night in a 4-0 blanking of Wichita, earning his second shutout of the season. His strong play this week improves his record to 17-13-2 for the season, along with a 2.66 goals against average and a 91.5 save percentage. Caravaggio and his teammates sit a single point behind Lubbock and two behind Corpus Christi in the race for the fourth and final Southern Conference playoff slot, holding games in hand on both clubs.
