Gomez Wins NHL Offensive Player Award

NEW YORK/TORONTO - Scott Gomez, who was named Most Valuable Player after leading the ECHL in scoring while playing for the Alaska Aces in his hometown of Anchorage during the NHL lockout in 2004-05, was named the Offensive Player of the Week by the National Hockey League on Monday.

The 26-year-old had eight points in three victories to help New Jersey extend its winning streak to seven games. Gomez matched a season high with four points (1g-3a) in a 6-4 over Pittsburgh on Apr. 5 and scored the game-winning goal and had three points (2g-1a) in a 3-2 win at Montreal on Apr. 8 before ending the week by scoring a goal in a 3-2 win against the New York Rangers on Apr. 9. In his sixth NHL season, Gomez is second on the Devils with 31 goals and 77 points which are both career highs.

Former ECHL players have won the NHL Defensive Player of the Week award seven times, including two times each by former Wheeling and current Nashville goaltender Tomas Vokoun and former Richmond and current Detroit goaltender Manny Legace.

There have been 299 former ECHL players who have gone on to play in the NHL, including a record 43 this season who have made their first NHL appearance since playing in the ECHL. The ECHL has affiliations with 25 of the 30 teams in the NHL and there are more than 100 players on ECHL rosters under contract to teams in the NHL.

Chris Holt (Charlotte and New York Rangers), Mike Morrison (Greenville and Edmonton), Mike Dunham (Gwinnett and Atlanta), Adam Berkhoel (Gwinnett and Atlanta) and Rob McVicar (Victoria and Vancouver) have all played in both the ECHL and the NHL this season. Chris Beckford-Tseu (Alaska and St. Louis), Maxime Daigneault (South Carolina and Washington), Mike Wall (Augusta and Anaheim), Andrew Penner (Dayton and Columbus) and Frederic Cloutier (Pensacola and New York Islanders) have all played in the ECHL and served as backup goaltenders in the NHL this year.
