Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â A year after leading the NHL in scoring during the second half of the season, Scott Gomez officially was recognized by the ECHL today as the league's scoring champion for the 2004-05 season.
Gomez scored 13 goals and assisted on 73 others for 86 points, six better than Toledo's Carl Mallette and Augusta's Jamie Johnson and eight more than linemate Chris Minard, who scored an ECHL-high 49 goals. Gomez appeared in only 61 of Alaska's 72 games, yet his 73 helpers were 15 more than Johnson, who finished with the league's second-highest total. He enjoyed 26 multiple-point games, including a pair of five-assist outings in wins over Victoria January 5 and January 8, to help lead the Aces to their first ever division title as well as the 2005 National Conference championship.
Gomez, who turned 25 just before Christmas during the season, becomes the first Aces player since Keith Street to win his league's scoring title. Street racked up 135 points on 47 goals and 88 assists during the 1998-99 season in the West Coast Hockey League. Gomez enjoyed the best scoring year by an Alaska player since the 2000-01 WCHL campaign but his 86 points are the fewest ever accumulated by an ECHL Leading Scorer award-winner. Last season, while playing for the New Jersey Devils, he tied NHL MVP Martin St. Louis for the league lead in assists after a brilliant second half that saw him lead all scorers.
The Aces meet the Condors tonight in Game 2 of their best-of-five first round series, with Alaska leading 1-0, thanks in part to Gomez, who scored a goal and had an assist last night as the Aces took the opener 5-2. The series moves to Bakersfield's Rabobank Arena for tomorrow night's Game 3 at 6:00 p.m. AST. If necessary, Game 4 also will be played in Bakersfield Saturday at 6:00 p.m. AST, with the fifth and deciding game scheduled for Monday, April 18, at Sullivan Arena.
All of Alaska's first round playoff games will be broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and also will be made available on a pay-per-view basis at www.alaskaaces.com, courtesy of B2 Networks. For additional 2005 Kelly Cup playoff information or 2005-06 season tickets, please call 258-ACES.
