Alaska's second period explosion clips Condors in opener
April 13, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â Charles Linglet and Scott Gomez each had a goal and an assist as Alaska broke open a close game with three goals in less than six minutes to defeat Bakersfield 5-2 Tuesday in front of 5,152 at Sullivan Arena and grab an early lead in their best-of-five first round series.
With the crowd roaring continuously through most of the first two periods, the Aces struck first, as Linglet chipped in a drive from Ryan Gaucher on an Alaska power play at 5:17 of the first period. Vladimir Novak, who had scored only four goals all season, gave the Aces a 2-0 edge at 1:51 of the second period, assisted by Olivier Filion, who had not registered a point in the regular season's final 14 games dating to March 6.
Brett Lutes pulled the Condors within 2-1 by beating Alaska goalie Peter Aubry with a wrist shot in the upper right corner at 4:06 of the middle frame, but later took a costly penalty that may have been the turning point. After Bakersfield had killed off a two-man advantage, Lutes was whistled for cross-checking in an icing situation, and the Aces again converted the power play, as B.J. Young found Mike Scott for a one-timer at 13:40 and a 3-1 lead. Gomez deked Condor starter Davis Parley, who was pulled after two periods, and tapped in a forehand to extend the bulge to 4-1 with 3:34 left in the period, and when Joe Talbot stole an outlet pass and snapped the puck through Parley's legs less than three minutes later, Alaska found itself in complete control.
Lutes scored on a Bakersfield power play 55 seconds into the third period, but the Condors never seriously threatened and were out-shot 38-25, including 17-4 in the decisive second period. Aubry coasted to the victory in net with 23 saves, while Bakersfield rookie Andrew Martin finished up in the opposite goal.
The Aces and Condors square off in Game Two tomorrow at 7:15 p.m., with the series shifting to Bakersfield's Rabobank Arena for Thursday night's Game 3 at 6:00 p.m. AST. If necessary, Game 4 also will be played in Bakersfield Saturday at 6:00 p.m. AST, with the fifth and deciding game scheduled for Monday, April 18, at Sullivan Arena.
All of Alaska's first round playoff games will be broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and also will be made available on a pay-per-view basis at www.alaskaaces.com, courtesy of B2 Networks. For additional 2005 Kelly Cup playoff information or 2005-06 season tickets, please call 258-ACES.
