Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (7-3) earned two wins over the Kansas City T-Bones at Shaw Park on Sunday afternoon, completing a 3-1 victory in Saturday's suspended game, and then winning 4-2 in the originally scheduled contest.
In the continuation of the nightcap from Saturday's double header, the Goldeyes led 3-1 after six innings of a scheduled seven-inning game. Play was suspended due to the American Association's curfew rule, and resumed in the top of the seventh on Sunday. Left-hander Christian Torres took over for starting pitcher Parker French, and struck out the side in order to earn his first save of the year.
French (1-0) picked up the win, allowing one earned run on three hits in six innings. French walked two and struck out three.
Eric Stout (1-1) took the loss for the T-Bones (5-3), allowing two earned runs on two hits in four innings. Stout walked three and struck out seven.
Willy Garcia hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first to put the Goldeyes on the board. Forrest Allday blasted a solo shot in the top of the fifth, but was the only run the T-Bones pushed across. Adrian Marin's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth provided the Goldeyes an insurance run.
In Sunday's original game- which was scheduled for a regulation nine innings- Kevin McGovern passed Andrew "Ace" Walker for second place on the Goldeyes' career strikeouts list. McGovern (2-0) allowed one earned run on three hits in seven innings while picking up the win. McGovern walked one and struck out 11. His fifth strikeout was his 381st in a Goldeyes' uniform, passing the 380 Walker collected from 2008-12. McGovern struck out the side in order during his final inning of work.
"Just trying to fill up the strike zone," said McGovern. "Kansas City feels like a big league lineup. Big props to (Kevin) Garcia. That was his third game catching in two days. It was easy to say yes to every pitch he was putting down. We worked well together. Going up against a really good team like that and showing we can go toe-to-toe is a big deal. Hopefully we can take this into the Gary series."
The T-Bones scratched out an unearned run in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead, but the Goldeyes answered back with three runs in the bottom half. Reggie Abercrombie drew a leadoff walk, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error, and scored the tying run on a Wes Darvill sacrifice fly. James Harris and Alex Perez followed with back-to-back walks. Following a wild pitch, Harris scored the go-ahead run on a Marin groundout to second. Kevin Garcia made it 3-1 with a two-out, RBI single to centre.
Marin walked leading off the bottom of the sixth and eventually scored Winnipeg's fourth run on a two-out single through the right side from Josh Romanski.
In the top of the ninth, Carlos Franco singled home Darnell Sweeney to cut the Goldeyes' lead to4-2 and bring the tying run to the plate. Victor Capellan then retired Casey Gillaspie and Daniel Robertson to end the game and notch his third save of the year. It was Capellan's 32nd save as a Goldeye, which now ranks second on the franchise's all-time list.
Marcus Crescentini worked a perfect top of the eighth in the win.
The Goldeyes are off Monday and then welcome the Gary SouthShore RailCats for a three-game series beginning Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
