WINNIPEG - Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the signing of infielder Gabriel Martinez.

Martinez, 29, played in 11 games with Mexico City of the Mexican League this season, hitting .200 with three home runs and five RBI. Last season in 96 games with Saltillo and Laguna of the Mexican League, the product of Ponce, Puerto Rico hit .323 with 20 home runs and 68 RBI.

Before spending the parts of the last three seasons in Mexico, Martinez appeared in 14 games with the Kansas City T-Bones in 2010. He batted an astounding .415 with 10 home runs and 22 RBI.

Martinez was drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 27th Round of the 2001 MLB Amateur Draft. He played seven seasons in the Rays' organization, including 2005-2008 at Double-A Montgomery of the Southern League. He joined the Los Angeles Dodgers system for 2009, playing 72 games at Double-A Chattanooga of the Southern League.

A spot on the roster for Martinez was available when infielder Yurendell de Caster elected to sign with the Tabasco Olmecas of the Mexican League. In 31 games this season with Winnipeg, de Caster batted .351 with four home runs and 26 RBI. The Goldeyes retain de Caster's reversionary rights.

The Goldeyes have 22 players on their active roster, including 12 pitchers and 10 position players.

Winnipeg begins a seven-game homestand tonight with the first of four games against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.
