Sioux City Explorers News Release
Sioux City-----The Wichita Wingnuts pounded out 24 hits as they defeated the Explorers 19-10 Thursday at Lewis and Clark Park. Wichita scored early and often as they won their sixth straight contest and increased their division lead to nine games over the second place Explorers. After scoring two runs in the first inning, Wichita sent ten batters to the plate in the second and score five runs and the Wingnuts were off and running with a 7-0 lead and then added two more runs in the third to make it 9-0 before the Explorers finally scored a pair in the bottom of the third. If a 9-2 lead wasn't big enough, Wichita sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth inning and scored eight more runs to increase their lead to 17-2. The Explorers tried to battle back, but the margin for a comeback was too big. Even in the 19-10 loss, the Explorers did have a couple of bright spots. Brandon Newton had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 17 games, Michael Lang had one hit to extend his hitting streak to 11 and Adrian Martinez had three hits and three RBI's for the Explorers. Although the Explorers gave up 24 hits, Jon Plefka pitched four and one third innings, his longest outing of the season and gave up only two runs and five hits in his relief stint. The second game of the four-game series will be Friday at 7:05 at Lewis and Clark Park.
