Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
A Barbaro Canizares two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning was the boost the Winnipeg Goldeyes needed to beat the St. Paul Saints 8-2 Sunday afternoon at Midway Stadium.
The win pushes Winnipeg two games up on St. Paul for the American Association's wild card spot with eight games remaining for both teams.
After the Canizares home run, the Goldeyes scored three more times in the seventh inning to take a 5-0 lead, as Josh Mazzola scored on a Amos Ramon single, Luis Alen scored on a wild pitch and Ramon scored after an error by St. Paul shortstop Jake Krause on a Mike Coles ground ball.
A double by Ramon in the eighth inning scored Canizares and Alen and Chris Roberson hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to cap Winnipeg's scoring. It's the first time since August 3 in Sioux City that the Goldeyes hit two home runs in the same game.
The Saints tried to muster a comeback in the bottom of the ninth by tallying a pair of runs off Goldeyes reliever Brian Beuning, but Winnipeg's lead was just too much.
Winnipeg starter Chris Salamida pitched five scoreless innings, but takes a no decision. Jack Van Leur pitched the final out of the sixth inning to be credited with his first win as a member of the Goldeyes, while Beuning picked up his fifth save of the season by throwing the last three innings.
Saints starter Luke Anderson suffers the loss for St. Paul.
The final game of this four-game series goes Monday night in St. Paul. A win for Winnipeg would give the Goldeyes a three-game lead in the wild card as they head home for the final seven games of the regular season.
Matt Rusch (8-4, 2.60), who has the American Association's best era, will take the ball for Winnipeg tomorrow. He will face St. Paul's Anthony Claggett (7-3, 5.34).
The pre-game show on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds starts at 6:30 p.m. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
