Wichita Scores Eight Unanswered to Win Series

WICHITA, Kan. - The Wingnuts came back from down 4-0 to score eight unanswered runs, defeating the RailCats 8-4 in the series rubber match on Sunday afternoon. The loss eliminated the RailCats from any chance of winning the Central division and dropped their record to 46-47. The 'Cats elimination number is one in the American Association Wild Card race.
Tied 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth, the Wingnuts took the lead on three straight singles against RailCats reliever Marshall Schuler. They loaded the bases with nobody out, then Jessie Mier's sacrifice fly gave them a 6-4 advantage. Jared McDonald followed with an RBI single. The final run was scored on a Steve Stanley fielder's choice, giving Wichita the 8-4 lead.
Schuler (1-3) took the loss in relief, giving up four runs in two innings of work.
Chase Tucker stayed hot for the 'Cats after his 3-for-3 effort on Saturday, which included his first career RBI. He hit a two-out RBI single in the second to give the RailCats an early 1-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Wingnuts starter Jeff Nadeau walked the bases loaded for Tucker, who cleared the bases with a triple down the right field line to make it 4-0. Tucker finished 3-for-3 once again and has now reached base in eight straight plate appearances, with six hits, two walks and five RBI in that stretch.
Wichita got on the board in the fifth inning, as Wilson Batista reached on a single and scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 4-1.
Nadeau gave up four runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings, walking seven batters.
The Wingnuts rallied to tie the game in the sixth. Greg Porter hit an RBI single to score Ryan Khoury. Nolan Nicholson came on in relief and threw a wild pitch, allowing Jake Kahaulelio to score from third to pull the Wingnuts within 4-3. CJ Ziegler then hit a line shot off of Nicholson's ankle and into right field to score Porter and tie the game at four. RailCats starter Jon Gulbransen surrendered four runs in 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision.
The RailCats will travel home to Gary and have an off day on Monday before closing out the regular season with a seven-game homestand, beginning on Tuesday when the St. Paul Saints come to town for a four-game series.
