Offensive Struggles Continue for Saints in 8-2 Loss

ST. PAUL, MN (August 26, 2012) - For the second consecutive game the St. Paul Saints offense couldn't come up with the timely hit and lost to the Winnipeg Goldeyes 8-2 on Sunday afternoon at Midway Stadium in front of 5,070. The loss puts the Saints 2.0 games behind the Goldeyes for the Wild Card with eight games remaining.

Similar to Friday night's 12 inning pitcher's duel, the game remained scoreless into the seventh. Saints starter Luke Anderson was magnificent allowing just one hit through the first six innings. Goldeyes starter Chris Salamida, working on three days rest, went 5.0 scoreless innings. It looked like an epic battle between two teams battling for one playoff spot. That was until the seventh inning.

Anderson led off the seventh inning by walking Yurendell de Caster. That brought up former big leaguer, and 28 home run man in the Mexican League's this year, Barbaro Canizares. He crushed one over the center field wall, his first since joining the Goldeyes a week ago, which gave them a 2-0 lead. Josh Mazzola singled and Luis Alen doubled him to third which was enough to chase Anderson. Left-hander Taylor Sinclair came in and struck out left-gander Kyle Day. Billy Spottiswood then came on for the Saints and he gave up an RBI single to Amos Ramon scoring Mazzola to make it 3-0. A wild pitch scored Alen to give the Goldeyes a 4-0 lead. The final run of the inning scored when Mike Coles reached on a fielding error by shortstop Jake Krause allowing Ramon to score and make it 5-0. Anderson was charged with four runs in 6.0 innings of work allowing four hits while walking two and striking out five.

The Goldeyes didn't stop after the seventh adding two more in the eighth off reliever Bret Severtson. With one out Canziares singled and Mazzola moved him to second with a single. After a fielder's choice and walk loaded the bases, Ramon doubled home two making it 7-0 Goldeyes.

Chris Roberson added a solo homer for the Goldeyes in the ninth, his 11th of the season, making it 8-0.

The Saints offense finally woke up in the ninth when Jon Hurst led off with a walk and Ronnie Bourquin followed with a two-run homer, his 10th of the season.

The same two teams meet on Monday evening at 7:05 p.m. in the finale of the four game series. The Saints send RHP Anthony Claggett (7-3, 5.34) to the mound against Goldeyes RHP Matt Rusch (8-4, 2.60). It is BobblectionT with 750 Barack Obama bobbleheads and 750 Mitt Romney Dolls handed out at the gate. Fans will get to choose one and the candidate who reaches 750 first will be declared the winner.
