Goldeyes Fire on All Cylinders to Take Series

August 2, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes are very good when they fire on all cylinders. Those cylinders were firing Thursday night.

Matt Rusch gave the Winnipeg Goldeyes a quality start while Chris Roberson had four hits and Josh Mazzola hit his 12th homer of the year as the Fish beat the Kansas City T-Bones 8-4 to take the three-game series in K.C.

Rusch threw five perfect innings to start the game and then struggled to get through the seventh. Still, he gave the Goldeyes 6.2 innings and the Fish pounded out eight runs on 11 hits to support their starter.

With the win, the Goldeyes improved to 41-29, remained 4 1/2 games behind the first-place Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in the race for first in the American Association's North Division.

The Goldeyes got off to a quick 1-0 start as Price Kendall walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

In the fourth, Winnipeg made it 2-0 as Mazzola hit a solo homer and then in the fifth, the Fish broke it open with a pair. Kendall was safe on an error and Chris Roberson drove him home with a double. Roberson went to third on a ground out and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Weber.

In the seventh, with the Goldeyes up 4-2, Roberson set the table again with a leadoff single and Yurendell de Caster walked. Luis Alen doubled and Roberson scored and then Kyle Day singled and drove home de Caster. Mazzola singled and drove home Alen and then Amos Ramon was safe on a fielder's choice and that sent home Day. Winnipeg was now up 8-2 and it was up to the bullpen.

That's when Kaohi Downing and Craig James came on and held the T-Bones to only one run over the final 2.1 innings.

Mazzola and Roberson were the hitting heroes once again. Roberson went four-for-five with two runs scored and an RBI while Mazzola went two-for-three with a walk, his team leading 12th homer, a run scored and two RBI. The Goldeyes finished with 35 hits in the three-game series.

Rusch (7-2), who struck out five, walked none and got the win for Winnipeg, while Lucas Irvine (2-1) suffered the loss for Kansas City.

The Goldeyes headed north right after last night's game. Tonight the Fish will play the Sioux City Explorers at 7 p.m. in Sioux City, Iowa. The game can be heard live on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds calling the play-by-play.
