Former Diablo Homers in First MLB At-Bat

August 2, 2012 - American Association (AA)
El Paso Diablos News Release

EL PASO, TX - It took just four pitches for Eddy Rodriguez to make his mark with San Diego. Making his first career start Thursday, the Padres catcher blasted a 416-foot solo home run to left field in the third inning off Reds starter Johnny Cueto in his first Major League at-bat. Rodriguez caught for El Paso in 2009, totaling 84 games as a Diablo.

It was the first hit Cueto gave up and it gave San Diego its first run of the afternoon. It was also the first homer Cueto allowed since May 25 and just the fifth he's given up this season.

Rodriguez is the second player this season to homer in his first career at-bat, joining the Pirates' Starling Marte, who accomplished the feat on July 26.

The Padres trailed, 6-0, at the time, and Rodriguez's homer helped spark a three-run inning that cut the Reds' lead to 6-3.

The Diablos are in town tonight at Cohen Stadium with $1 Beer Thursday and College Night. Game time set at 7:05 pm (MST). Don't miss the opportunity to see El Paso's team finish their series against South Division leaders, the Grand Prairie AirHogs.
