Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Coby Cowgill ground it out as long as he could, but the relentless St. Paul Saints offense was just way too much.
Friday night at Shaw Park in downtown Winnipeg, the Saints scored 10 runs on 13 hits as the first-place Saints beat the third-place Goldeyes 10-2.
With the loss, the Goldeyes fell to 19-27 on the season and lost their second straight game. With the win, the Saints improved to 37-10, 17.5 games ahead of Winnipeg in the race for first in the North Division of the American Association.
St. Paul scored early and often, putting up one in the first, one more in the fifth and two each in the final four innings. Cowgill allowed four of those runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings.
Trailing 10-0 in the ninth, the Goldeyes got solo homers from Canadian rookie Chris Robinson and Josh Mazzola. It was Robinson's first home run as a professional and Mazzola's 11th of the season. Mazzola, who is now hitting .316, leads the American Association in home runs.
Scoring two runs was kind of important for the Goldeyes. They had gone 17 innings without a run after losing 6-0 in Fargo on Thursday afternoon.
The Fish scored only two runs on 10 hits. Two Goldeyes delivered six of those hits: Robinson, the player of the game went three-for-four with a run scored and an RBI, while Mazzola went three-for-four with a run scored and an RBI.
Crenshaw (7-1, 1.88 ERA) earned the victory for St. Paul, while Cowgill (2-2, 4.82) was tagged with the loss. Three Goldeyes relievers - Brad Mincey, Rett Varner and Bo Logan allowed six runs on five hits over the final 3 2/3 innings.
The Goldeyes and Saints will play Game 2 of this four-game series at 6 p.m. on Saturday night at Shaw Park. In a battle of lefties, Kyle Anderson (1-3, 4.99) will toe the rubber for Winnipeg against St. Paul's Pedro Martinez (5-2, 3.36).
