
Blasters Battle Rain, Thunderheads in Texas

Canyon, TX-For a second straight night, Joplin not only lost out to poor weather conditions but they fell to the Amarillo Thunderheads again 6-3 in game one Thursday night of what was supposed to be a doubleheader at West Texas A&M University's Wilder Park.
Joplin (25-17) ended up losing the rain-shortened series two-games-to-none. Amarillo (22-23) scored five times in the first inning to set the tone. Logan Vick led off with a triple to right. Corey Bass singled to center for the game's 'first run. Jason Martin then doubled to make it 2-0. Juan Martinez singled home Martin for another run. Rene Leveret and Taylor Smart singled and doubled respectively for a 5-0 lead.
The Blasters managed single runs in the third and fourth innings before Maikol Gonzalez cut the lead to 5-3 in the top of the fifth with a solo home run lined over the wall in the left field corner. Amarillo plated its final run in the bottom of the fifth for the game's final margin.
On the mound, Jake Meiers suffered the loss for Joplin. Meiers (1-3) worked just one-third of an inning and allowed five earned runs on five hits. Amarillo starter Anthony Figliolia posted the win. Figliolia (6-2) worked five innings and gave up three earned runs on eight hits with one strikeout and one walk. Richard Barrett earned his first save of the season as he went one inning with one hit and one strikeout.
At the plate, each side had ten hits. For the Blasters, Maikol Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with the homer, an RBI, and a run scored. Omar Luna collected two hits in defeat. Corey Bass, Rene Leveret, and Geraldo Valentin all had two hits for Amarillo.The Blasters had game two of the doubleheader Thursday night suspended due to inclement weather. It was tied at 4 going to the bottom of the sixth. Joplin returns home this weekend for three games against Sioux City Friday through Sunday.
